A chess set consists of 32 pieces: 16 white and 16 black, representing two sides of a chess battle. To understand how to play chess and develop strategy, it’s important to know how each piece moves. This very basic knowledge is necessary to truly grasp the power of each chess piece and in the course of a match, make the most of that individual piece’s power.

- U.S. Women Beat Russia!
  The U.S. women's team beat Russia 3-1 today, spearheaded by wins from Krush over Women's World Champion Kosteniuk and Zatonskih over T. Kosintseva. In the men's match, Kamsky beat Svidler on board one, but the U.S. still lost 1.5-2.5
- Onischuk and Rohonyan Score Big Wins
  Alexander Onischuk and Katerina Rohonyan came through today with big wins, allowing the men to defeat Hungary and the women to draw China. In round 8, both American teams will face Russia.
- Kinks in Kamsky Match Resolved
  FM Mike Klein reports from Dresden, where the Kamsky-Topalov match has been successfully resolved.
- Big Tests for Americans in Round Seven
  After round 6 victories, the U.S. teams will be “rewarded” with two top-five seeds: the men play Hungary and the women face China. Also read about our new U.S. title-winners: 3 GMs, 2 IMs, 2 WIMs and 4 FIDE Arbiters!
